To the anonymous poster, just because the song is listed under an iTunes playlist doesn't mean it is grunge. Furthermore, look at the band's entire song list, you can see that two songs are listed under "Pop." If you think this band is "pop" and "grunge" you need a lesson in music history and just music in general. Even more, Grunge died in 1994, this song came out in 1998, how can something so incredibly simple be so complicated? [edit] Reverting

Why does everyone keep reverting my addition to this article? I clearly cited it; at the beginning of the live performance, track 5, Dave Grohl clearly states that the song is a reworking of "Mama, I'm Coming Home." If necessary, I'll post the MP3 online so you can hear him say it yourselves. I'm going to go ahead and revert 68.4.159.101's revert. --Evil Eccentric 00:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

For the record, it's a joke. He starts noodling on the guitar and says, "Wait a minute, isn't that 'Mama I'm Coming Home' or something like that?" He wasn't even sure that was the right song. He then starts mimicking Ozzy singing "Mama I'm Coming Home", then jokes that he ripped off Ozzy "because it was such a big hit".

Later in the set (which was a half-hour performance), right after the band goofed around on Eddie Money's "Baby Hold On to Me" and Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", Grohl references it again. "This is how we make records. We sit around and play Eddie Money songs, and rip them off. And then we sit around and play Ozzy songs, and we rip them off. And you guys don't even notice!"

Anyway, the added reference failed WP:RS - it wasn't mentioned in the liner notes (as the inserted ref claimed). The statement is not in record and isn't confirmable (per WP:V). -- ChrisB 01:57, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

"That's my way of saying that when I was young, I didn't have big rock heroes, I didn't want to grow up and be some big sporting hero. My heroes were ordinary people and the people that I have a lot of respect for are just solid everyday people - people you can rely on."

This is the quote that keeps popping up. I can't source it. If somebody else can, that'd be awesome.

If you google search the quote, it comes up with the website with a bunch of quotes from Grohl (supposedly) about every song. KMils 17:52, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Isn't this song at least partially about Kurt Cobain? "Too alarming now, to talk about, take your pictures down...." etc?

Cobain certainly petered out. Don't you think thats contradictory to the song?

Dave didn't have that great of a relationship with the man, and he's denied this a million times over.

MY HERO What kind of hero were you thinking of? "Heroes are a funny thing. When I was young I had KISS posters and I listened to Rush and thought the Beatles were magicians. But the real heroes in my life were people that I was close to. Pete Stahl who was the singer of Scream (Grohl's pre-Nirvana band) was one. I was 17 years old when we hit the road and that guy showed me the ropes, so to me he was a hero. And family members ...my mom's a saint. She raised two kids with no money and we managed to be a happy family, so she seems like a hero to me."

Did Kurt Cobain figure in your thinking at all? "After Kurt died, the whole idea of hero worship or idolatry warped into something I thought was strange. You take a human being and you turn them into a deity. It's really bizarre. I remember I was driving around Ireland when I was trying to get away from that whole fiasco after Kurt died. I was in the middle of nowhere and it was beautiful. But then I was driving down a country road and I saw a hitch hiker with a Kurt Cobain t-shirt on so my perception of a hero kind of changed. If you listen to the lyrics to the song it's all about an ordinary hero. Just a regular person."

The song was inspired by how people view others (ie: hitch hiker), which sums up what he says in the second part. His perception of a hero changed when he saw the hitchhiker and he takes on the meaning of hero in a different way and wrote a song about it. This is what a hero is to me so to speak.
