My Father is a Hero (traditional Chinese: 給爸爸的信; simplified Chinese: 给爸爸的信; pinyin: Gĕi bàba de xìn), also known as The Enforcer or Jet Li's The Enforcer, is a 1995 Hong Kong action film directed by Corey Yuen and starring Jet Li.

[edit] Film's Plot

Kung Wei (Jet Li), a police officer of the People's Republic of China, was assigned to spy on a group of gang members planning terrorism in Hong Kong. Despite his worries about his sick wife, who suffered severe asthma, and his beloved son Ku Kung (Miu Tse), who mastered martial arts skills at age 8, his duty of serving and protecting still turned out to be unmissable.

Wei partnered with Darkie, a prisoner recently was expelled from prison who once worked for the gangmember's boss known as Po, and went to Hong Kong. After a brief moment of enjoyment, Wei and Darkie went to meet Po, who never took off his shades in the movie, and the rest of the gang members on the top of a skyscraper. He was an extremely cruel person that every member of the gang respected him (once he was teased or angered, he would threaten anyone by slapping or punching with force.)

Upon discussing the plan to import the bombs, Darkie proposed an idea so pitiful that Po nearly killed him by kicking off the building if Kung didn't manage to grab hold of him on time. Po agreed to Kung's plot to wear explosives on a vest in order to keep the foreigner's gang members to open fire during the process of buying bombs with $3 million and then retrieving the money back once the explosives are in Po's hand. It started in a local bar where Anne Fong (Anita Mui), a Kong Kong detective and her boyfriend and colleague, Inspector Cheng, were chatting. After the exchange, Po notified his team of thugs standing by a few hundred yards away in a car with the simple transmission of: "Let's do it!" Wei and his troops immediately wore bandanas but a nearby photographer photographed Wei before his face was completely covered. He crashed the car into the bar and provoked a gang war. During the shootout, Wei took off his vest and threw it onto a lamp to get it heated up. When Cheng tried to stop him, he took him hostage. Soon Hong Kong police and the SWAT team arrived at the scene. To prevent Cheng from getting killed, they switched hostages in which they drove away from the scene in a police cruiser and the explosion of the bar. Wei suddenly realized that she was driving the cruiser into a break on an under construction highway ramp in an attempt to suicide. He gained control of the steering wheel from the back seat and made a sharp turn which halted the cruiser. He forced Anne to get out, blew up the cruiser by shooting the gas tank to slow the pursuing cops from behind and Wei escapes.

Back in Beijing, Ku was teased by school bullies of the crime his dad committed even though he didn't tell anyone. Knocking them out still didn't completely settle the dispute. Upon his way to home, Anne followed him. Upon arriving, he lied to Ku's mom that her husband is a partner of her working at the stock market. But she knew that she was a Hong Kong police officer, coming to find out about Wei. One night, Ku was writing a letter to his dad when suddenly his mom went into an asthma attack. She died in the hospital after giving the officer her final requests to take care of Ku and give a letter to Wei when meeting again.

Wei was devastated by the shocking news of his wife's death and immediately lost the consciousness of what Bo commanded him to do. When Po forced him to do what he was told, he violently engaged into a fight. While fighting, flashbacks of the past events and happy times with his wife played back and force in his mind, which made him lose focus on fighting as well. At last, when Wei was beaten up, Darkie halted the fighting and told him that Po is not a man you want to mess with. Anne and Ku planned to travel to Hong Kong by a speed boat. Upon discussing a ride with local fishermen, thugs who worked for Bo attacked them. Since both mastered martial arts skills. They took down the thugs and jacked their boat and headed for Hong Kong. On their way, Anne told Ku that she first planned to arrest his dad, but then refused because he found out that he's a police, which excited him because he never even knew but was told to be kept as a secret. In Hong Kong, Inspector Cheng filed a case of Ku missing, which appeared on newspapers and news channels as well as his father on the lookout. When Ku noticed a police cruiser in front of his apartment, he immediately got away.

When Anne got home, she listened to the voice recording system, which recorded every single telephone conversation made, she realized that Ku broke her secret by telling his dad what Anne expressed about her. After the message ended, Wei suddenly sneaked into her apartment from her window. While in stealth position, his pager suddenly received a transmission. Ku transmitted a message saying not to enter the apartment due to the risk of being arrested. Unfortunately, the beeping of his pager attracted Anne, which they counter attacked each other. Ku blared that she fooled him to Hong Kong so the authorities would arrest him but she replied that this wasn't her plan. Police immediately responded after the disturbance but when they got inside, they found out that Wei, jumped out of the window. But Anne has given the letter to Wei and done his wife's request. On the street, Ku was picked up by Po, which he was droven to his private bar, got beaten up, and ditched in a trash bag. Wei immediately came into rescue, only to find out that Bo recognized him as his best criminal he ever experienced as a cop, tried to kill him. One of Po's men, disguised as a garbage truck driver, tried to run him over with a garbage carrier. Their frenzy fight soon brought them from the roof to the bottom of the thug's truck. Fortunately, Anne responded to Wei's call for help made earlier, killed the driver and rescued him. Despite Wei's mistake, Darkie earlier rescued Ku, which respected him and brought him food. Still wounded and confused, he asked him where his dad went. Darkie calmly told him that although he's not confident about where he is now, but do believe that he'll be fine. Wei was put into the care of Anne, in which she once murmured that he does wanted her to help but refused in every circumstance. After regaining consciousness, he too, wanted to know where his son went. The next day, the gang's plan was up. They planned to plant bombs at an antique auction where riches would carry loads of cash onto a barge. There are six bombs placed in specific locations with a security camera marking its place. The video would be transmitted to security tapes at a source. The gangs are restricted from firearms but provided with tonfas instead and also the tickets to access on-board. On the dock, where Ku and Darkie stayed, Po and his group of gang members suddenly appeared and headed towards them unnoticed. Darkie warned Ku that Po's coming and told him to seek hiding under a boat. When Po came, Darkie pretended to be as unsuspicious as possible but was killed anyway. Before Darkie died, Po retreated, and Ku tried to comfort him. Despite his severe wounds from the bullets fired from Po's revolver, he used his final seconds of life providing him with information of what Po's plot tended to be before he died screaming in pain. Ku discovers Po's location, which is a private boat where feedbacks from the cameras are located, then immediately phoned his dad about what Po's up to. When Po and his gang members left for the barge, he lured the security guard who kept a lookout on the monitor onto the top deck, where Ku slammed the metal door in between onto his head, knocking him unconscious. He then notified his dad where the bombs are located via Darkie's cell phone. One by one, Wei disabled the bombs planted onboard the ship. But before the last bomb was deactivated, the cell phone's battery ran out, leaving Wei thinking that he got all of them. During the auction, Po announced that everyone must take out all their cash they brought with them in order to get out of the ship alive. The audience panicked, but was held back and spanked by the gang member with tonfas before reaching the exits.

A large melee battle between Wei and Ku against Po and his men ensued, with the father and son duo gaining a victory against Po's men. Po on the other hand turned the tables on both of them, eventually holding Ku hostage by choking him. Ku uses his breathing exercise to delay the choke until Fong intervenes by shooting Po aboard a helicopter. Fong and Wei try to evacuate Ku off the boat via the helicopter, but Po arms the timer of the last bomb and pins Wei down with a chain while Fong and an unconscious Ku escape. Wei eventually gets out of the pin and knocks Po out, narrowly escaping the boat's explosion and reuniting with Fong and Ku.
