I added the speculative part about Muspelheim and Arabs, due to the fact that we do know that the norsemen have met the Arabs and fought them on many occasions, and lost. It wouldn't be far thinking to believe that legends grew from these encounters.

muspellheim was called the flame land because that is where they extracted iron out of the "mus" or "marsh" it may have also served as a lighthouse on pellworm island. jmushorn@yahoo.com

midgaard is the island of sylt. Because it is in the midle of the North-South viking route. Mid= Mus and Gaard is an incorrect translation of the word horn.

Surt is of course the traditional greek word for Africa or Surt Libyia that is where the Frisians got the Etymology for South or Southorn. jmushorn@yahoo.com Alright hand over the Nobel Prise and put me on the Charlie Rose show.
