[edit] Scope of Portal

It has been my understanding that portals exist principally for readers rather than editors - they are an alternate means of navigating through the related articles within a particular subject area - in this case, Music of Australia. If this is true, why then do we have sections on the portal with such as Things you can do, Categories, Featured content and Good articles? It seems that those headings are more suited for the project page and that this page may have lost its focus slightly. Look at say Portal:Australia or Portal:Chemistry. I see it has been at FPC but this aspect was not raised then. Anyway, I'm interested in comments. —Moondyne 05:42, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

I was under the impression that portals exist for readers, too, however, those sections you pointed out are there primarily for readers. Things you can do is trying to recruit people to join Wikipedia by suggesting things for them to do, Categories to help readers find a particular topic easily and Featured content and Good articles exist to locate to readers some of our best articles relating to Music of Australia. I guess the reason why these particular sections appear on the main portal page is due to the way the portal is layed out. Some portals, e.g. Portal:Australia, are split into different subpages, and use a tabbing system to navigate between them. This portal uses the default box format portal with all content on one page. Categories and featured content seem like relevant sections to me, however, I'm not too sure about Things you can do and Good articles; I guess, if the subject has many good articles, then a particular section would be necessary, however, if there are only a couple of good articles relating to the subject of a portal, it'd be best probably to just leave them out. I looked at a few random pages at WP:FPORT and see that many do have a "Things you can do" box, but I still wonder about all of the editor based things. I wonder how this is different from the project page? Or is just a tizzied up project page? What is its purpose? —Moondyne 06:24, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
To encourage readers to contribute to the encyclopedia, or to encourage readers who want to contribute, but don't know where to start. I'm not really sure what the difference between them is, but I really don't have a problem with these sections on portals, as long as it is kept compact, and displays only a few items (and these items should be articles rated high importance by the parent WikiProject).
