MusicForMasses was a digital media player application designed to play .MP3X files downloaded from AllOfMP3.com. The application required you to login to AllOfMP3 to play the tracks that one downloaded, and will not play tracks encrypted to another user. This posed a problem as it required the user to have an internet connection to play their files, rather than allowing them to "authenticate" their computer for constant use.
As of 21 December 2006, the player is no longer available for download, with no mention of it on Allofmp3.com.
[edit] Features
MusicForMasses in its last stage could be considered "lite" in comparison to its competitors. While it is not known whether its developers were aiming for a wide-range of use, the playback of audio files was limited to the .MP3X format. MusicForMasses also lacked the CD burning and searching capabilities found in many alternative media players.
[edit] .MP3x Format
MusicForMasses used a proprietary format called MP3X. Little is known about the format, although speculation hints at a generic LAME encoded MP3 file with weak encryption to prevent sharing (for a short time, this encryption could be bypassed using 'MusicForMe', allowing extraction of un-encrypted MP3 files, however due to compulsory MusicForMasses player updates, this no longer works). As of now, MusicForMasses was the only application designed to play this format.
