The Museu Militar do Porto (translated: Military Museum of Portugal) is a pertaining institution to the Portuguese Army, vocacionada for the preservation of military history.

The will to create a Military Museum left of the half civilian, led for the City council of the Port and to the return of the colecção of the portuense painter Joaquin Vitorino Ribeiro, ran the year of 1920, when the President of the Republic, Dr. António Jose de Almeida, inaugurated an exposition on the Liberal Revolution of 1820, in this city.
The Military Institution, in 1957, through the Military Region North (then Command of 1ª Military Region), tried to make a survey of the traditions description-military and to adapt the Castle of S. João of the Estuary for museum.
From 1970, João of the Estuary looks itself to an alternative to the Castle of S., to install the Museum Military, due to the high cost of the adaptation of the property. This space appeared in 1977, in a building of the Street of the Heroísmo, where the delegation of the PIDE/DGS functions , in the Port, since the decade of 40 up to 1974.
The Advice of the Revolution, for decree-law 947/76 of 31 of December and 242/77 of 08 of June, defines the objectivos and creates the Military Museum of the Port. The solemn inauguration of the Military Museum of the Port was efectuou in 21 of March of 1980, for then the President of the Republic, General Ramalho Eanes, and being definitively when making use of the public.

The quantity of the Museum has two proveniências: of particular offers and material of the Army, with historical and museológico interest.
The colecção of miniatures of the evolution of the soldier is former-libris of the Military Museum of the Port, since daily pay-history to the actualidade. This colecção is represented by surrounds 16,000 miniatures, proceeding from the most famous plants of European miniatures, as: Britains, CBG Mignot, Segom, Heyde, Elastolin and Lineol, among others.
It also makes use the Museum of a dedicated room to the Revolt of 31 of January of 1891.
The museológico quantity is still constituted of Mouths of fire and Cars of Combat, having accumulated of stocks a period, between centuries XV and XX, that it meets in the park of Heavy Weapons and the Pavilion of Weapons. In this last space, it can be observed evolution of the cutting weapons and some colecções of firearms, among others interest parts description-military man, becoming a complement the contents programmarians of the education of Native and World-wide History.
It possess moreover the Museum, a small thematic library that is when making use of the consultants.

The building, where the Military Museum of the Port is installed, initially was destined to the habitation of D. Maria Coimbra, having been ordered to construct in the ends of century XIX. It is a characteristic construction of oitocentistas ends, conceived for family abode. It lodged Spanish nuns, during the Spanish Civil War, and, in 1948, the D. Ismênia was acquired by the State Dawn Coimbra Young chicken, for 450 stories, in order to install the PIDE/DGS.
