Part of the Albemarle County Public School System, it is, according to its charter, intended for students, whose needs are not met in a traditional high school. It focuses on building strong, personal relationships - the size of the schools is at most 110 students, in accordance with the concept of "everyone knowing everyone". It also prides itself in being a Glasser Quality School - focusing on William Glasser's ideas for education.
