[edit] Hmm...
The article seems a bit harsh. I've heard it used a lot, but mostly its in jest, and not meant as a serious insult. Also, there's no mention that the word is so widespread in the UK it can be found in some dictionaries. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.145.242.49 (talk • contribs) 09:39, 10 February 2007.
- I've never lived in the UK or any regions that supposedly use the term as slang, but if you can back up or counter any of the claims made here with published articles in print or online, it would be great for this article. As noted in the edit summary, I created the page to get the continual additions being made to The Muppets off of that article. The slang derivation of the capitalized term has nothing to do with that topic. —scarecroe 17:15, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

- That's a great example! That film's writer is British, so it fits with its regional usage. —scarecroe 20:01, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

- I'm afraid I can't come up with any sources, but yes muppet is widespread here. And it's not a very serious insult, my old chemistry teacher used to use it. Liam Markham 14:10, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] lowercase?
I don't think that this article should be lowercase, seeing as it isn't vital. If you were to begin a sentence with it, it would always be capitalised, although if you were to begin a sentence with eBay, it is always lowercase. Parable1991 05:01, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Hibernian-muppet-ad.gif
Image:Hibernian-muppet-ad.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- BetacommandBot 06:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Henson/Disney recognition
I found this official poster which references the emergence of the slang usage of the term by official parties. I haven't figured out a way to work it into the article though. Additionally, sometime in the early 2000s, Henson included a dictionary-styled definition of "Muppet" on the packaging of some of their merchandise. I'm still in the process of digging that up. —scarecroe (talk) 05:02, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
