[edit] History

In 1994, Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology (ITTM) was born in Taiping, Perak by Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), the largest telecommunications company in Malaysia. The first campus was Telekom Malaysia Berhad's former northern region office. The first batch of 42 students were selected to undergo an experimental 2-year telecommunication engineering diploma program. The excellent academic success of the 1st and 2nd batch has rewarded ITTM with the first private university status in Malaysia. With the university status in 1996, ITTM changed its name to University Telekom. Two campuses were established, one in its original location in Taiping, Perak and the other in Melaka.

The Melaka campus was set up in 1997 and located in the Ayer Keroh district, the initial setting up of the campus involved converting an old building belonging to the Telekom Malaysia Berhad's southern region office.

Its Cyberjaya campus opened in Malaysia's first intelligent city of Cyberjaya, on 8 July 1999. This campus was the brainchild of the country's fourth Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as a center of learning and research for the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), a 750 km² area designated as the country's high-tech research and industrial area. The relationship between the campus and the MSC is intended to be similar to the relationship Stanford University shares with the Silicon Valley. Later, he requested the management to change the name of Universiti Telekom to Multimedia University.

Within the first five years of its founding, the university's total student population grew beyond 10,000 in both campuses.

The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.

[edit] E-Scroll

Multimedia University is the first university in the world to introduce E-Scroll to its graduates. In the university's first convocation, all graduates received an E-Scroll from the Chancellor. The E-Scroll is digitally signed and stored in a CR-ROM as well as recorded on the Smart-Card (microchip-based card).

As more and more job applications go on-line, these graduates can attach their E-Scroll on the on-line applications before submitting it over the Internet. This eliminates the need for paper-based scrolls. A more important point to highlight is that paper-based scrolls are difficult to be verified. To verify paper-based scroll one requires a copy of the original signature of the signatories. The contents of paper-based scroll requires a copy of the original signature of the signatories. The contents of paper-based scroll are also not protected and are subjected to modifications. However, digitally signed documents use public key cryptography technology that will provide full protection of the documents. Only the originator (or signatory) of the document can do the modification or editing.

In addition to the above system, the university also provides a Registry of Graduates homepage that will allow anyone to verify the validity of the E-Scroll. With these systems in place, the university not only eliminates fraud, but also complements the e-governance system, preparing itself for a truly web-based society.

[edit] Melaka Campus

The campus is nestled in Bukit Beruang (lit: Bear Hill) and has greatly affected the local community. With increase in students, the community has seen growing numbers of residential area and commercial outlets.

In 2004, the course for Bachelors of Law (LLB) was introduced in this campus. With over 120 law undergraduates under its wings, Multimedia University had already build an entirely new Law Building.

[edit] Students

As of Jan 2008 the university has a total of 19,464 students enrolled in 110 different courses in both campuses, including undergraduate and graduate students. Approximately 19% of these are international students from 80 countries. The university has also set itself a deadline for 2010 whereby it intends to increase the population of international students to 30% of the total student population. University students consistently score top placements in national business plan competitions. Students enjoy a rich variety of social activities with over 100 campus student groups.

[edit] Technoprenuer development

As an integral part of MMU’s vision to be a premier university with excellence in learning, research, discovery and enterprise, Center for Commercialisation and Technopreneur Development was established at a very early stages of MMU

MMU fosters, promotes and facilitates a culture and environment of enterprise and commercialization of research and innovations among MMU staff and students. This culture is being implanted and nurtured through the following scope of work provided, facilitated and co-ordinated by CCTD, whose three strategic thrusts are: Technoprenuer Development, Commercialisation and Legal Services.

[edit] Clubs and societies

All clubs and societies are registered with the Student Affairs Division (STAD. Each club or society is allocated a specific budget to enable them to run their clubs efficiently. However, students are greatly encouraged to seek alternative means of funding their activities or functions. The student clubs and societies are categorized as follows:

  1. Student Representative Council (SRC)
  2. Faculty-based societies
  3. Residential-based societies
  4. Other societies: Sports Clubs, Recreation / Outdoor Clubs, Martial Arts Clubs

The university also has professional engineering/IT student bodies which are:

  1. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Student Chapter (formerly IEE Student Chapter)
  2. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch
  3. Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Student Chapter

In year 2002, the Dean of Faculty of Engineering(FOE), Engr. Professor Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik, under the patronage of the Chancellor YABhg. Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj. Mohammad Ali, founded 'Multimedia University Engineering Society Overseas Research Programme'(MESCORP). MESCORP is an undergraduate-based research work which involves a field study initiated by the university's engineering students.

Among the more notable international events that have been organized by the students in MMU include the World Universities Debating Championship in 2005, the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2003, and the All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2000.
