Mulakulam
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mulakulam is a quite village in Kottayam District, Kerala, India and is situated on the banks of the River Muvatupuzha. It is lush green with thick vegetation, and old tharavads (old houses in Malayalam). The population of this village is about 2500 people. It is home to a traditional family called the “Moosedathu Muaramthookil”, believed to be one of the first Brahmin families to embrace Christianity in 1100 AD. This family still owns close to 20% of the total area, which is about 10 square kilometers.
Agriculture is the land’s traditional and main occupation. But lately due to the high cost of labour and low returns, industries like wooden handicrafts, burnt bricks manufacturing, sand rigging etc… have come up big time. These unregulated industries add to the severe environmental hazards and pollution that is already contributed by Hindustan Newsprint Limited, a newspaper manufacturing giant which is located in a nearby village.
The Syrian Orthodox Church at Mulakulam was founded around 16th century A.D.[1][2]
