Muhammaad Kamaruzzaman (Bangla:মুহাম্মাদ কামারুজ্জামান) is a politician in Bangladesh. He is the Senior Assistant Secretary General of the Islamic political party Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. He is also serving as the editor of a weekly published by Jamaat, Sonar Bangla.
Muhammad Kamaruzzaman who hails from Bajitkhila under Sherpur District (erstwhile Mymensingh) was born on 4 July 1952. He started his schooling in Kamri Kalitola Government Primary School at his native village Mudipara. In his school life he was all through first boy. He got Residential Scholarship in Class VIII from Sherpur G.K.M. Institute. In 1967 he passed SSC Examination in the first division with four letters from the same school and was awarded Residential Scholarship for his brilliant result. Afterwards he got him self admitted into Jamalpur Ashek Mahmud College. But he could not sit for HSC Examination due to his active participation in the 1969 mass upsurge. He passed H.S.C. Examination with good result in 1972. Then he graduated from Ideal collage in Dhaka City with distinction in 1974. He did his M.A. in Mass Communication & Journalism from University of Dhaka in 1976. He was a resident student of Salimullah Muslim Hall. Apart from having luminous result Mr. Kamaruzzaman, during his college period, was champion in the debate and cultural competitions. While reading in class nine Kamaruzzaman came into contact with dawah of Islamic Movement through late Kazi Fazlur Rahman, father of former Jamaat woman MP Rashida Kahtun. He joined Islamic Students Movement just after receiving dawah. Subsequently he was the Organizing Secretary of Bangladesh Students Islamic Movement in 1972. He discharged the responsibility of President of Dhaka City Unit during 1974-77. He was appointed as Secretary General of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir in 1977. In April 1978 he became Acting President of Islami Chhatra Shibir and after one month was elected as Shibir President in by election. He was re-elected as President for session 1978-79. IN 1979 Islamic Youth Camp was held at Mauchak Scout Camp on the outskirt of Dhaka. Leaders of Students Islamic Movement across the world took part in the camp. Mr. Kamaruzzaman deserved commendation for successfully administering the camp as the chief organiser. As Kamaruzzaman was a student of journalism, reasonably he made his debut in journalism. In January 1980, he joined Monthly Bengali Dhaka Digest as Executive Editor. He took the charge of Bengali Weekly Sonar Bangla as its Editor in January 1983. Mr. Kamaruzzaman joined Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh in October 1979 and took oath as Rukn (Member) on 16 December the same year. In 1981-82 he was Joint Secretary of Dhaka City Jamaat-e-Islami. He served as Central Publicity Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami from 1983 till 1991. Since 1992 he has been discharging the responsibility of Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. He played a vital role as a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Political and Liaison Committee in the movement for restoration of democracy in Bangladesh from 1983-90 and in the movement for Caretaker government during 1993-95. Mr. Kamaruzzaman underwent imprisonment twice. He was arrested on 25 December 1971 and imprisoned in Dhaka Central Jail for nine months without trial. In the end of June 1973 he was again detained by Late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s son Sheikh Kamal and his accomplices and was in jail for further nine months. He was then charged with anti state activities. But the then government could not prove it. He was released from the jail on 22 March 1974. Mr. Zaman is a good social worker. He has set up a good number of educational institutions and organisations. He is the Chairman of Sherpur Darus Salam Trust which runs Madrasah, orphanage, Clinic, Library and a number of Maktabs. (Islamic school at primary level) Besides, he is also patronizing many welfare organisations. He was a member of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and elected executive member of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) for the term 1985-86 and 1986-87. He is a member of the National Press Club. Mr. Kamaruzzaman is a widely travelled person who visited many countries of the world. He travelled Saudi Arabia, Iran, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Hong Kong, UK, UAE, USA, Canada, France, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Yemen, Brunei, Bahrain, and Kuwait. During his visit in these countries he participated in many international conferences and workshops. Moreover, he spoke to gatherings of Bangladeshis living there and met world leaders and internationally reputed personalities. In 1976 he performed the holy Hajj. Mr. Kamaruzzaman writes columns on current affairs at home and abroad. His thoughtful articles on burning issues published in different Newspapers and Journals have been applauded by the readers. He wrote a number of books such as adunik Juge Islami Bipolob (Islamic Revolution in Modern Age), Biswa Paristhiti-O-Islami Andolon (World Situation & Islamic Movement), Paschatter Challenge-O-Islam (Challenge of West & Islam), Sahngrami Janonata Addapak Ghulam Azam (Struggling Leader Prof. Gulam Azam). Another book titled, "Isthitishil Ganotantra: Samanupatik Paddatir Nirbachan" (Stable Democracy: Propotional system of Election) is going to be published very soon. Morever, he translated a precious book of intenationallyy acclaimed Islamic thinker late Kjhurram Mauad into Bengali titled "Quran Adhayan Sahayika" (The Way to the Quran). He is married to Begum Nurun Nahar in 1977 and they have five sons who are studying University, College and school Level. Mr. Kamaruzzaman takes pleasure in reading. His favourite personality is Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon him).
