[edit] Etymology 'Berge Stahl'

I think it's useful to have the meaning of ship's name in the article. Ctbolt 01:54, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree, but had to remove the paragraph below because it is incorrect in several places:

The name Berge Stahl means "Steel Mountain" when translated directly from German to English, but many of Bergesen's ships are named Berge "Something", Berge may be used as both first and last name in Norwegian. The word Berge does also mean to save or rescue in Norwegian.

Now, why one would want to try a German-to-English-translation to analyze the name of a Norwegian ship is a bit beyond me, but anyway: As a German native speaker, I can tell for sure that "Berge Stahl" is not a correct German construction. "Steel mountain" would translate to "Stahlberg". "berge!" is, however, the imperative form of "to salvage" in both German and Norwegian, but I believe that all that's behind the name is a pun on the shipowner's name. --217.225.15.12 04:10, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
