    • Maps generalise and therefore create inaccuracy
    • Originally maps were made to make territories look bigger, add legitimacy to conquest or ambition to expand
    • Boundaries often reflect political goals (i.e. include all of disputed areas)
    • Blunders often happen, and get repeated
    • Deliberate misrepresentation of relative location etc.
