Mrs. Fields Cookies is a chain of bakeries, located mostly in the United States and Canada, founded by Debbi Fields (b. 1956, Park City, Utah). She and her husband started their business in the late 1970s, opening the first of many retail bakeries in Palo Alto, California, selling homemade-style cookies which quickly grew in popularity. Mrs. Fields cookies are commonly sold in grocery stores, as well as the bakeries (which are often located in shopping malls).

[edit] Work Place

As a work place, Mrs. Fields leaves much to be desired. Since January of 2007, Mrs. Fields has seen several rounds of layoffs even though they were termed as 'transitions' in which not only were employees let go, but assets of the companies were sold. At this time, as employees were being shown the door, the 'Senior Staff' were lining their pockets with 'bonuses' based, not on making sales projections, but making sure that overhead was kept low - thus, in laying off employees, the overhead was kept low, so the board members and VP's were handed checks totaling in the millions.

[edit] Controversy

Main article: Christmas controversy

On October 9, 2007, the American Family Association sent out an "ActionAlert" to their members stating that Mrs. Fields had banned "Christmas" products. The email accurately claimed that a company supervisor told "Diane H. of Michigan" that 'Merry Christmas' had been removed to avoid offending some people. The email spike resulting from this AFA alert was independently detected by Global Research at Hitwise.

Mrs. Fields confirmed the exchange on October 12th, stating "This week, a woman from Michigan called the Mrs. Fields customer service line to inquire about Christmas gifts from Mrs. Fields Cookies. She was incorrectly told that Mrs. Fields will not be selling or promoting Christmas specific items this year, and instead would be focusing on Holiday items as to not offend anyone. Once hearing this, she quickly spread this false information. This miscommunication by the employee has been addressed, and we’ve been assured by the head of the customer service center that this error in communication will not occur again." [1]

It is unknown if the company reinstated "Christmas cookies" back into their product line before complaints.
