Mperia is an online music store which was founded in 2003 by BitPass, Inc. It was designed to allow independent musicians to sell their own music online.
Mperia differentiates itself from other online music stores in a number of ways:
- Artists upload their own music directly.
- Artists price their own music, charging users what they think each track or album is worth. Tracks can cost between US$0.25 and US$1.50.
- All tracks are in MP3 format, with no digital rights management allowed.
Mperia uses the BitPass payment system for selling tracks. Artists keep 70% of each track's revenue, and are not charged by Mperia otherwise for usage.
In 2004, Mperia partnered with CD Baby to sell tracks from CDBaby's catalog.
Sadly, the store is now apparently closed. The following message was displayed on the site in mid-January, 2007:
Dear Mperia Customers, Bitpass is discontinuing operations and has partnered with Digital River to provide operational support during the period prior to shut down. As of January 26, 2007, Bitpass Buyers with US dollar denominated accounts will no longer be able to make purchases and our partner, Digital River, will begin the process of refunding all unspent monies. If you have made any sales, these records will be available online via your Bitpass Merchant account and can be viewed by logging in at https://www.bitpass.com/earn/login.html using your accounts registered email address and password. These records will remain online and accessible until February 28, 2007, and any funds on account or owed will be refunded or paid by Digital River after that time. Thank you for your business and support.
[edit] Statistics
As of March 2005, Mperia currently has over 250,000 tracks from over 20,000 artists (including CDBaby artists).
