Mozart Fellowship

The Mozart Fellowship is a 12-month composer residency attached to the Music Deparment of the University of Otago. It may be awarded for a second time only to any one composer. The Fellowship was established in 1969 and the first appointed Mozart Fellow was Anthony Watson who held the position for two years (1970 & 1971).

The fellowship is New Zealand's premier compositional residency; the list of past fellows includes many of New Zealand's most notable composers.

The appointed composer is paid a stipend which allows him or her to live and work on projects of their own choice, although traditionally many recipients of the award have written compositions for performers within the University's Music Department or the city's orchestra the Southern Sinfonia (formerly the Dunedin Sinfonia).
