In medicine, a mouthwash test is a simple noninvasive procedure, used to detect if a patient is carrying a single gene defect such as that of cystic fibrosis. The test involves administering a saline mouthwash in order to obtain epithelial cells from the patients buccal cavity. From these cells is possible to isolate DNA, which can then be analysed for any genetic mutations.
