Mount Union was founded in 1846 by Orville Nelson Hartshorn as "a place where men and women could be educated with equal opportunity, science would parallel the humanities and there would be no distinction due to race, color or sex." Admission to the College has always been predicated on academic excellence and promise.
Seventy-seven percent of the faculty at Mount Union have earned a doctoral or terminal degree with graduate training at universities in the United States and Europe.
Mount Union College enrolls 2300 undergraduates; approximately 52 percent women and 48 percent men, representing more than 20 states and 15 countries. Mount Union has an active alumni base of more than 13,000 graduates located around the world.
Mount Union is proud of its religious heritage and its background in the Methodist Church. For more than a century the College has been officially connected with the Methodist Church. It is now affiliated with the East Ohio, West Ohio and Western Pennsylvania Conferences of the United Methodist Church.
Mount Union has been ranked for 14 consecutive years as a top regional liberal arts college in the Midwest and is also ranked as a Best Buy for regional liberal arts colleges in the Midwest.

- Dr. Mark McNaught Associate Professor and Chair, Stated at Mount Union in 1998 BS Lafayette College; MS, PhD University of Rochester. Courses Taught Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Hydrology and Water Resources, Mineralogy, Petrology, Structural Geology, Regional Geology Research Interests:Study of deformation associated with thrust sheet emplacement during mountain building.Development of methods for measuring finite strain, with emphasis on computerized methods.Study of the relationship between deformation and metamorphism, particularly the origin of solution cleavage.Monitoring of seismic activity in northeast Ohio.
- Dr. Richard F. Giese, the 11th president of Mount Union, is a native of Chicago, Illinois. Giese earned his B.A. degree in English literature from Concordia College in 1971. He later earned his M.Div. from Concordia Seminary in 1976 and his M.A. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned his doctoral degree in college and university administration from Kent State University in 1986.
- Dr. Truman Turnquist, a native of Kipling, Saskatchewan, is interim vice president of academic affairs and dean of Mount Union. He earned his bachelor of art's degree in chemistry from Bethel College and a Ph. D. from the University of Minnesota.
- Lee Ann Thorn, chair of the Board of Trustees, is the executive vice president and treasurer of GBS Corp. of North Canton, Ohio. She is a 1983 graduate of the College.
- Dr. Roger Palutsis, a native of Chicago, Illinois, is currently the team doctor for the current Division III Football Champion Mount Union Purple Raiders.
- Dr. Carol E. Canavan , Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs(2003). Dr. Canavan earned her B.A. in Communication and Theater from Michigan State University in 1969, her M.A. in Theater from the University of South Dakota in 1972, and her PhD in Higher Education Administration from Ohio University in 2001. Dr. Canavan currently holds the position of Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs but has also held other positions including Dean of the College(1999), & Director of Grants (1990). Even before Mount Union Dr. Carol E. Canavan has held other positions including Director of Student Activities (Kentucky Country Day School, 1983) and Assistant Head (Andrews Schools, 1986). Dr. Canavan has published many professional papers including :

With school colors of purple and white, Mount Union competes in the Ohio Athletic Conference and in NCAA Division III athletics. The teams are nicknamed Purple Raiders, and the school's mascot is MUCaw, a purple macaw.
Mount Union sponsors 11 men's varsity teams: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, swimming, tennis and wrestling. The school also sponsors 10 women's varsity teams: basketball, cross-country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

By far the best-known sports program at Mount Union is football, led by head coach Larry Kehres (260-21-3, .920 over 22 seasons), which has won a record nine Division III national championships --all since 1993. They also hold the all-division record for consecutive victories at 55, which ended in their loss in the 2003 national championship game. The Purple Raiders won 110 consecutive regular-season games between 1994 and 2005, posted 14 undefeated regular seasons, won 16 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, and had the best overall record in the 1990's (120-7-1 .941).

[edit] Academic Programs
With 45 majors and 56 minors to choose from, Mount Union College offers a wide array of academic coursework in keeping with the liberal arts tradition. Students are encouraged to thoroughly explore a variety of departments and majors to discover potential talents and interests. Through general education course requirements, students are able to test the waters of a variety of majors and minors, allowing students to find a perfect fit. Also, in developing a close relationship with their academic departmental advisor, students are able to find guidance in deciding what majors and minors are most advantageous.
Mount Union's communications students can reach out to their student body through the school newspaper, The Dynamo, or the school's radio station, 91.1 WRMU. The Dynamo was established in 1889 and its slogan is "A source of Light and Power since 1889." WRMU is called "The Radio Voice of Mount Union College." Its format is smooth jazz on the weekdays, with oldies/rock on the weekends, and DJ's choice from 10 pm to 2 am every weeknight.
One of the most popular programs for students at Mount Union College is the music program. Students can get involved in many kinds of bands or choirs, including Concert Choir, Mount Union Alliance Chorale, "Fire-Engine" Choir, Opera Workshop, Alliance Symphony Orchestra, Repertory Strings, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, and more.
The Theatre Department puts on two productions every fall, and varying productions in the spring. Every spring semester alternates between a musical and a straight play every year for the main stage show, and every spring there are also student-directed one-acts. Theatre productions are open to all students, regardless of major or class rank.
