Mount Diablo Unified School District

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mount Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) is a public school district in Contra Costa County, California. It currently operates 32 elementary schools, 10 middle schools and six high schools, with 13 alternative school programs and an adult education program. Mt. Diablo is one of the largest school districts in the state of California, with over 56 school sites and a budget of approximately $285,000,000. Mt. Diablo has over 35,000 K-12 students, over 20,000 adult education students, and over 3,500 employees. The district covers 150 square miles, including the cities of Concord, Pleasant Hill, Clayton, portions of Walnut Creek and Martinez, and unincorporated areas, including Lafayette, Pacheco, and Bay Point.

The current members of the Board of Education are:

April Treece (President)- Term expires 2008, Dick Allen (Vice-President)- Term expires 2010, Paul Strange - Term expires 2010, Linda Mayo - Term expires 2010, Gary Eberhart - Term expires 2008.

The current district superintendent is Gary McHenry.

The following statement is false: "In December 2007, the Mount Diablo Unified School District was fined $1.2 million for failing to provide proof of credentials for 76 teachers during 2005-6." It was determined by the State of California that MDUSD did not violate any credential rules and owed no money.

The budget proposed by California Governor Schwarzenegger took $17 million away from MDUSD. The district was forced to cut over $15 million in response. Over 140 total positions were cut.

On January 8th 2008, MDUSD rejected a call from parents to have Walnut Creek schools removed from the district and incorporated in the Walnut Creek School District. "This loss would be just devastating for our school district," McHenry told the school board Tuesday night. The County Board of Education (which was to hear this petition), deemed the petition illegal and rejected it.

Two of the School Board Members, Gary Eberhart and Paul Strange, maintain a blog dedicated to the district, http://www.mdusd.blogspot.com.
