Mount Carmel High School (Houston)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mount Carmel High School was a private, Roman Catholic high school in Houston, Texas. It is administered by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
[edit] Background
Mount Carmel was established in 1956 by priests of the Order of the Carmelites.[1] The Diocese took over in 1986 and it is now the only Diocesan operated high school in Houston. [2]
Mount carmel had started to make new renovations to its facility and had spent a large quantity of money in fixing air conditioning and plumbing. In 2008 the Archdiocese announced that Carmel would close at the end of the 2007-2008 school year, saying the the school was too costly to renovate and maintain, their plans for the building are not being given. At several meetings with the students, board members, parents and faculty on April 25th, 2008, and consecutive days later, the Archdiocese stated that it would take measures to help relocate the students. They will try to help make up the vast difference in tuition pay (Mount Carmel was the least expensive high school in the diocese) but for only one year. After that the parents and students have to pay the full tuition that their transfer school is asking for. The school closed on May 28, 2008.[3][4][5][6]
During the same year Houston Independent School District trustees voted to create Mount Carmel Academy, a public school intended to serve students formerly at Mount Carmel High School.[7]
