Morgenstern is a Germanic surname meaning morning star. The surname does not have Jewish origin but comes from a line of German aristocracy later losing title and or money due to squander or marriage. Morgenstern religious affiliations from 1585 to 1900 in Germany are: 80% Protestant; 18% Catholic; 1% Jewish. However, in the United States, the name is associated with American Jews.

The name first appeared in Saxony-Anhalt. An uncommon alternative spelling is Morganstern.
