[edit] History

The original founders were Charles Eldridge Morgan, Jr., a veteran of the American Civil War, and Francis Draper Lewis, the son of a successful cotton merchant. In 1883, Morgan & Lewis hired Morris Rex Bockius, who dominated the firm from the turn of the century until his death in 1939. He became a partner fifteen years after he joined the firm, which became Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

In 1882, the firm began to handle work for the United Gas Improvement Corporation, which became the largest gas and electric utility company in the United States, and is still a client today. By the end of the 19th century and into the 20th, Morgan Lewis counseled many leading companies including Philadelphia’s largest newspaper, Pennsylvania’s largest railroad, a major paper manufacturer, banks and trust companies, and the largest manufacturer of steam locomotives in the world.

In 1994, the New York office of the firm hired about 50 lawyers from the old-line law firm of Lord Day & Lord.

Morgan Lewis was the first registrant of the MLB.com domain name. On September 6, 2000, the firm transferred the domain to Major League Baseball. As part of the agreement, the league posted a link to Morgan Lewis's new website for ten days.[1]

[edit] Today

Morgan Lewis now has over 1,400 lawyers in 22 offices worldwide. Of these, over 120 Morgan Lewis lawyers have been included in the 2006 edition of Chambers USA: America's Leading Business Lawyers, and the firm is ranked 42nd in the 2008 Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms.

Morgan Lewis's labor & employment law practice was named winner of the The American Lawyer's 2006 "Litigation Department of the Year for Labor and Employment Law", and their 2005 leading mutual funds counsel. Additionally, Morgan Lewis was ranked fifth in the National Law Journal's 2004 survey of "Who Represents Corporate America" and third among the top U.S. law firms named in BTI Consulting Group's national survey of client service performance for law firms for the fifth consecutive year.
