From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mor Karbasi is a singer-songwriter, from Jerusalem, Israel.

One of her main projects is Ladino music, also known as Judezmo, Spanyolit, or Sephardic - the ancient language and music of the exiled Jews of Spain, most of her songs are self written, but she maintains some traditional influences.

Mors heritage is mixed Moroccan and Persian, according to her Moroccan grandfather, "the blood remembers" meaning that before this, the ancestors came from Spain. Her connection to this culture is expressed passionately through her music.

Some of Mor's achievements so far are, a Ladino festival TV performance in Israel, several UK concerts including Londons Trafalgar Square open air stage (2006 and 2007) and many festivals (Womad Festival 2007 Charlton Park, and Las Palmas-Canary Islands). And a highly acclaimed debut album Glowing review in the Guardian UK (25.4.08)ending with "This is surely one of the albums of the year."

She also has been known making guest appearances with other groups with compatible styles. Flamenco is also one of her areas of talent and Mor is comfortable singing with great Flamenco musicians.

Traditional influences Mor Karbasi collects and sings many songs in Ladino, but also, Andalucian music sung in Hebrew, with Arabic melodies & scales. This is called Piyyutim, and is a type of religious prayer, traditionally only sung by men, and is a communication to God through song. Mor is bringing the past into a new life and into a wider crowd of listeners.

In terms of available material, she has released a CD of recordings, entitled Broken wings which was home produced. A 4 track EP called Rosa is also released, and a full album entitled the Beauty and the sea has now been released, produced by grammy award winning producer/engineer Matt Howe.

She has been working with 'Mintaka' management company since early 2007.
