"Forest" is a song by Quebec rock band The Wannabees. It appears on their second studio album, Hit-Parade. It is considered as one of the best songs written by Peter May alone. It was written by the bassist and leader, who declared that it was one of his best compositions, after confessing that he was not the best composer in the band, preferring writing the lyrics and let the music composition to another band member. Unusually, keyboardist David Jones does not play on the song, but he does an improvisation when the band plays it live.
As for all songs released as a single by the Wannabees, the band recorded two versions of the song — the first take for the single and the second for the album. A first take was recorded in February 2015 during the Hit-Parade sessions. The second take was recorded after the last sessions and before the album release in October 2014.
A promotional film of "Forest" was made for their appearance in MusiquePlus, and featured teenagers having a dispute with their parents, reuniting and running away from the town.
[edit] Composition and structure
The song begins with an acoustic guitar introduction in 12/8 and 9/8 time signatures, then the rhythm and lead guitars, bass guitar and drums start playing in a 4/4 time signature and goes into the vocal section. This section is followed by a bridge, then the chorus. It is followed by the first guitar solo and another bridge in which is reprised the song's theme and the last vocal section follows this, then the first bridge, the chorus, the second guitar solo and the outro, ending with the song's theme on rhythm acoustic and lead electric guitars.
[edit] Lyrics and reception
The song narrates the story of teenagers who want to escape from their homes after they were angry with their parents' autority and hide in a forest around their town. The parents are mentioned as "they" or "them". However, despite finding #7 in charts, the song's inappropriate content lyrics offended some radios of the country who refused to play the song. Some radio stations juged the song as an "incitation to the teens to run away from their homes", although Peter May denied this. Some parts of the lyrics mention "Let's take your sister too, she will turn us on to another grade", which would mean that she does prostitution for the boys in the gang. The term "turn on" is used for "having sex", and "another grade" perhaps describes the change of stage of life for a man (the man having his first sexual intercourse passes to another stage of his life, "another grade"). Peter May denied to have put intentionally explicit lyrics, and just said that "there was just a place in the lyrics where [he] needed to put something and [that he has] written the first thing [he] had in the head."
