Montverde Academy is a college preparatory, coeducational independent school serving Grades PK3-12. The boarding program serves boys and girls in Grades 7-12 & PG. Montverde Academy is located in Montverde, Florida, and is currently home to approximately 288 students. The school is an estimated 75% Asian, 20% White, 3% Black, and 2% Native American. The school was built in 1912 and has a very strict set of rules reinforced by a discipline system which includes demerits and hours that students work off. One of the most famous reinforcers of these rules is study hall volunteer Bonnie Parks who has given out an estimated record of over 2,000 hours in one school year.
The school was established in 1912 by Professor H.P. Carpenter from Winchester, Kentucky.
The Academy has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) since 1927.
[edit] Athletics
Montverde's varsity soccer team finished their season as state runner-up, losing the state championship at home. The Montverde Academy basketball team finished their season with a 30-0 record , ranked number four in the country by USA Today. They won five in-season tournaments and beat two eventual state champions, hosting two major tournaments at the Academy. They did not, however, compete for a state championship themselves. The basketball team has a major sponsership from Nike, inc Most notably, however, is the Montverde Academy Track Team. Although they have suffered some defeats in the past, they have shown excellent performance overall due to the unflinching leadership of their head coach. Montverde Academy's boys jv basketball team also had a great season in 2008. Lead by coach John Sickels the team crushed many opponents and lost only 3 games out of games out of 19 with the other team winning by less than 4 points. The team is filled with many promising youngsters who practice and condition year round with the passionate and experienced varsity coach Kevin Sutton. The varsity and jv basketball teams are no question the hardest working sports teams or teams of any kind in the school. The baseball team has been very dominat over the years after coach Andrew Parks apparently ( his innocene has been justified though ) illegally recruited players from Puerto Rico to play for Montverde. The team went from a joke to a dominant force in no time at all. Due to the actions of coach Andrew Parks the team cannot compete in the playoffs. The team is mostly Puero Rican but there are a few plaers from other races. The team has no black players though as a result of baseball not appealing to many blacks throughout the United States.
Montverde Academy has a rich history in competitive sports in Central Florida. The Academy is made up of local and international athletes. It is a unique, diverse opportunity for athletes to compete in a multicultural environment. The coaching staff is very dedicated to improving the skills of the student athletes. All varsity level sports programs are supported through a junior varsity program so players have the ability move to the varsity programs. The basketball varsity program under coach Kevin Sutton and assistant coach John Sickels has sent many players to play division one ball at many prestigious basketball schools most notably UCLA. This year alone Dashan Harris, Marcus Capers, Steve Tchiengang, and Femi Akipendite will head to ( in order as listed ) Top 25 ranked Texas A&M, Top 25 ranked Washington State, Top 25 ranked Vanderbilt, and Seton Hall.
