[edit] 505 R-Bus Pius X BRT line

The STM 505 R-BUS Pie-IX, running along Boulevard Pie-IX (Pope Pius the Ninth), provides supplementary, limited-stop service to the 139 Pie-IX bus route during rush hours. The 505 R-BUS currently offers curbside service like its 139 counterpart, sharing bus stops along the route, with a frequency of 7 minutes or better during the morning, late afternoon and evening on weekdays.

Prior to 2002, this route used to run against traffic on the part-time dedicated bus lanes on the opposite side of the traffic median. It featured dedicated sheltered BRT stations, a high frequency of service, and priority traffic signals. The use of these bus lanes were suspended indefinitely after a passenger (ironically, the wife of an STM bus driver[citation needed]) , unaware of the traffic contraflow, was struck by a bus. (But this wasn't the only fatality; there were many other deaths over the years.)[citation needed] There are plans to restart the service once safety cones and fences are installed along Pie-IX Boulevard.[citation needed]

The line now runs from the intersection of Boulevard Henri-Bourassa and Boulevard Albert-Hudon [1] along several streets in the borough of Montreal-Nord to Boulevard Pie-IX and on to the Pie-IX Metro station. The system runs in a south direction in the morning and in a north direction in the afternoon and evening.

There are ideas to replace the BRT with a true LRT tramline on the street using the shared right-of-way. A Montreal Metro line was also once planned to run underneath Pie-IX Boulevard, but this never came to fruition.
