[edit] Administration
Mont-Saint-Aignan is a commune of the Seine-Maritime département, in the Haute-Normandie région. It belongs to the Communauté d'agglomération Rouennaise, created in 2000, and is the fifth-largest suburb of the city of Rouen. It lies directly adjacent to the north side of Rouen. In addition to its population of 21,265, there are also around 20,000 students at the University and the various Grandes Écoles.
[edit] History
The commune was created in the 19th century out of the merging of the two former parishes of Saint-Aignan (Sanctum Anianum mentioned in the 12th century) and of the Mont-aux-Malades (Monte Infirmorum around 1251 which takes its name from a hospital founded in the 12th century). Henry II built a church there dedicated to St. Thomas à Becket in 1176 in an attempt to make up for his unwitting role in the murder of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
[edit] Miscellaneous
It was the birthplace of Jacques Anquetil (1934-1987), the first cyclist to win the Tour de France five times.
It is also the birthplace of Mohamed Sissoko, the immensely talented Juventus F.C footballer, and of Tony Parker the NBA star recently married to Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame.
