Monomorium smithi is an ant of the family Formicidae, endemic to New Zealand, particularly northern offshore islands. It is found in small colonies nesting under small stones in open grassland adjacent to native forest, but the species is little known and they may be found elsewhere.
Mandibles have five teeth. Length of the worker ant is about 2.3 to 2.6 mm. The antenna has about 12 segments, the last being a conspicuous club. Coloration is uniformly brownish-yellow.
Workers move slowly even in warm conditions. They have been observed carrying off grass seed.
