Monica Spear Mootz (born October 1, 1984 in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela) is a model and former Miss Venezuela 2004.
She was considered a dark horse during the Miss Venezuela 2004 pageant and wasn't seen as a possible winner. Despite this, Spear went on to win the national crown and represent Venezuela at Miss Universe 2005. She successfully made the top 15 after Ana Karina Anez (Miss Venezuela 2003) failed to make the top 15 in Miss Universe 2004 (for the first time in 22 years) in Quito, Ecuador. She went on to place in the top 5 after the evening gown and swimsuit competition. During the interview or Final Question round, Spear failed to answer the question given by Miss Mexico, Laura Elizondo and therefore was named 4th runner up. Many pageant fans believe that Spear could have placed higher if she had answered the question completely. Similar cases like Spear were Miss Missouri USA, Larissa Meek who also placed as 4th runner up in the Miss USA 2001 pageant after failing to answer a question. The two cases show the importance of the interview or final question round, which can break or win a delegate's chances. Prior to being named the "fifth most beautiful woman in the universe," Spear completed a bachelor's degree in theater from the University of Central Florida before returning to Venezuela to compete in the national pageant. Her participation in Miss Venezuela also became notorious when she was asked during the traditional "breakfast with press" the day after the pageant, because of her degree, which Venezuelan playwright she liked the most and her answer was "Gabriel García Márquez"[1]
She represented the state of Guarico and despite being tipped as a dark-horse candidate to go to the Miss World pageant, beat out 26 other contestants in the world's most competitive national beauty contest for the right to compete in Miss Universe.
She crowned her successor Jictzad Vina in September 15th 2005. Monica Spear currently aspires to be in the entertainment business and to become a successful actress.
