A technique using hypnotherapy to train mothers for childbirth. The Mongan method is often known as hypnobirthing, and named after its founder Marie (or 'Mickey') Mongan M.Ed., M.Hy. Mongan is a hypnotherapist, Harvard Fellow, and author of "HypnoBirthing: A Celebration Of Life", published in 1989.
The hypnobirthing method is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. It is a rewarding, relaxing and stress-free method of birthing that teaches a mother, along with her birthing companion, the art and joy of experiencing a drug-free, natural birth in an easier, more comfortable and often pain-free manner. The hypnobirthing method is based on the belief that when the mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function during birth in a well-designed manner, as it does with all other living creatures (1)
The benefits of the Mongan method of HypnoBirthing are claimed to include: improved pain management, reduced need for medical intervention, a faster and more relaxed birthing process, a less traumatic entry into the world for the child.
Work is closely compared to that of Michelle Leclaire O'Neill, another leading practitioner and author on the subject.

[edit] The basic elements of the Hypnobirthing method:
- The mind has control over the body: what experienced in the body is determined by the mind. In birth, when the mind accepts the belief that birth can proceed naturally with no pain, the body experiences low level of pain or no pain at all.(1)
- Fear sensation works against the natural course of birth: When the human body senses fear it goes into a state of alert and defense. Consequently, blood is sent to all organs that are involved in the process of running or fighting. Since the uterus plays no role in protecting the body when it is in danger, minimal blood circulates to this organ, even though during labor the uterus requires large volumes of blood. The lack of blood flow to the uterus works against the body in labor and can result in increased pain and a lengthened birth. (1)
- Endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers, and can be released by relaxation, self hypnosis and guided imagery(1)
