Monash Association of Debaters

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monash Association of Debaters is a debating society at Monash University, Australia. It is Australia's most successful debating society, and one of the world's strongest debating organisations. It is the only university to have ever won consecutive World Championships, and it has been a grand finalist in 10 of the last 14 Australasian debating championships.[1] It is currently ranked 4th in the World Universities Debating Ranking.[2]

Past office bearers of the Association include the current Treasurer of Victoria John Lenders MP and President of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Labour Party Bill Shorten MP.[3]

[edit] History

The Monash Association of Debaters was founded in 1961, at the same time that Monash began teaching its first students. It quickly grew to become one of Australia's largest debating organisations, and now has over 300 members.

[edit] Monash Debating Review

The Association produces the world's only academic journal on debating, the Monash Debating Review.[4][5] It is an annual, scholarly publication which was founded in 2002. Since its commencement, more than 1500 copies of the journal have been distributed worldwide. It is an English-language journal, but has contributions from a wide range of countries, such as Russia and the Philippines. 2008 will see the 6th edition of the Review.
