Mohsin Abbas

Mohsin Abbas is a Pakistani journalist in exile based in Toronto (Ontario) Canada.

Abbas, 33, an award winning reporter, filmmaker, blogger and press freedom activist was detained and tortured several times during his reporting carrier by police and other enemies of press in Pakistan, one of the most dangerous regions for journalists.

He spent the last 14 years of his career working as a reporter and features writer on South Asian issues, such as human rights, gender, freedom of expression and child labour.

Before coming to Canada in the year of 2002, after revealing the death story of a fellow reporter who was murdered by police, in a national daily newspaper, Abbas was pressured to deny the news he had published. Local police detained and tortured him when he refused to cooperate.

The following month, while working on a book about the "Police and Press in Pakistan", Abbas had his home office and home raided by police.

Abbas, a fixer and stringer for various international media outlets was detained and tortured first time at the age of 19 for his investigative reporting during the year of 1993.

Born in a Muslim family, Abbas was co-founder of a weekly newspaper for Christian and other minorities in Pakistan and served as editor for a controversial human rights magazine called Purnam (Tearful Eyes).

As Pakistani and South Asian analyst, he has appeared on CBC radio and Television, Radio Canada International, BBC, CTV, Sun TV Global national shows and many others.

He have had the chance to gather invaluable experiences working with the best journalists from outlets such as BBC, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Omni TV, CBC(Fifth Estate), Deutsche Welle (DW), Sunday Times, Daily Pakistan, AAJ TV and The Hamilton Spectator where he works as online reporter.

While living in Canada, his writings on Pakistani subjects constantly bring him threats from authorities in his native land.

Currently he is working on a documentary called "The Handcuffed" the story of a fellow journalist, his wife and baby brother killed by authorities. This film focuses on the challenges journalists facing in the lawless tribal zone Waziristan along the Afghanistan border in Pakistan.

Living in beautiful Canada he enjoys, traveling, cooking, listening music, working out, photo and videography and runs a news blog on South Asian Herald[1].

Abbas is an active member of Toronto based exiled journalists group "Journalists in Exile" (JEX). He speaks various south Asian languages.
