The Modern University for the Humanities, MUH (Moscow, Russia) has been established in 1992 in Moscow. MUH is a state-accredited higher educational institution and issues diplomas of state educational standard.
MUH's philosophy is to bring accessible high-quality education independently from a student’s place of residence. Using the individualized approach based on standardized knowledge control methods we are able to provide students with appropriate level of academic support. MUH aims at increasing students’ activity during learning process provided with the most up-to-date technologies. Flexible education system is a reliable tool for making learning process truly effective.
General management of the MUH’s network is performed from the Moscow headquarters. Currently there are more than 800 branches within the framework of MUH in the territory of the Russian Federation and the CIS countries including Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan. The constant work is being carried out for extending the geographic coverage of MUH’s activity, and attention is mainly paid to development in foreign countries. There are currently more than 180,000 students within the University.
Education in MUH is conducted on the programs of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate studies and vocational education. The main element of the MUH’s scientific-educational constituent is the three-level structure of exterritorial teaching staff which implies diversification into faculties, specialties and sub-faculties. This system allows to attract best academicians and experts. MUH is the only Russian higher educational institution possessing satellite educational technology which gives an opportunity to arrange top-quality process of higher education in every geographic destination in the Russian Federation and in a number of Asian and European countries. MUH possesses satellite educational television with its own teleport for twenty-four-hour four-channel broadcasting throughout the territory of Russia and the CIS countries. These four channels are also being used for data transmission. In the nearest future all MUH branches will be equipped with VSAT-teleports (now already 180). This will allow organizing high-quality broadcasting and educational process using two-way satellite connection between branches and Moscow headquarters.
The telecommunication system of MUH consists of: • Satellite link – up to 36 Mb/s; • Optical fiber communication line – up to 1000 Mb/s; • Eight broadband Internet lines – 128-384 Kb/s; • Over 500 Internet lines – 20-60 Kb/s.
Utilization of video, audio and slide lectures, teaching computer programs - “supertutors” and other multimedia products is an essential part of educational process at MUH. The lion’s share of multimedia educational materials is produced by MUH staff in studios equipped with modern computer and recording facilities.
MUH pays significant attention to innovative activity. There are eight scientific-research institutes founded within the University. Their fields of interests are: • Educational Programs Development; • Educational Technologies Development; • Television Education; • Computer Education; • Study Psychology and Sociology of Education; • Mass Media and Publications; • Electronic Communication Development; • Students’ Health-Improvement.
MUH has established a publishing house. This unit issues two newspapers with combined circulation of more than 100,000 copies per month, digests, substantial number of popular scientific and educational journals. The total annual run of educational, methodical, and scientific literature at the MUH’s publishing house makes up more than 8 million copies of 4,000 titles.
MUH is a member of a number of international organizations. In September, 2003 MUH joined Magna Charta Universitatum to start full-fledged integration with the Bologna Process. The University concluded bilateral agreements with a number of foreign universities. Many students from MUH go abroad to take different courses. Most popular are visits to foreign language schools. Among the latest achievements there is an introduction of the Diploma Supplement following the model developed by UNESCO-CEPES, Council of Europe and European Commission where the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has been used as the core element. Finally, since September, 2005 MUH has been enjoying full-scale cooperation with the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) of the World Bank.
