A Novita (borrowed from the Italian word for 'novelty') is a novel that consists chiefly of stand-alone short stories arranged in a manner that serves the over-all movement of plot and of character development, though the genre tends to emphasize character development or the depiction of a community, an era or an event rather than plot. Early examples of the novita are, Dubliners, by James Joyce; Winesburg, Ohio, by Sherwood Anderson; Go Down Moses, by William Faulkner, and The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury. Later examples are The Joy-Luck Club, by Amy Tan; Trespassers Welcome Here, by Karn Karbo; The Beggar Maid, by Alice Munroe; The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien, and Aquaboogie, by Susan Straight. It is worth noting that some novitas employ both stand-alone short stories and vignettes. These vignettes generally function as devices ("interstitial material") that enhance plot or the thematic connection between the stories.
