[edit] Old comments

There should maybe be another entry for the hip-hop mixtape, e.g. those by DJ Green Lantern and as discussed at http://mixtapekings.com/home/ Mkilly 01:09, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Why was Mixed track medium reverted to it's original name? (unsigned comment from anon)

Because the term "mixed track medium" seemed 100% made up to me. It has zero google hits, for starters. It's nice that you've tried to adress the percepted bias against more modern mediums than audio cassettes, but even modern homemade compilations on CD or MiniDisc are more commonly called "mixtape" than anything else - and even if that weren't true (and it could be, it's just based on my experience), they're certainly not commonly called "mixed track medium". -- grm_wnr Esc 11:50, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] "Buy mix tapes" links

Aren't commercial links off-limits? --FuriousFreddy 00:13, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

commercial links are off-limmits and should be deleted fast, especially if the link to crap like DJ Green Lantern "mixtapes". All Gangsta and Jiggy Pseudo Mix-Tapes Producer and Retailers > Please type in mixtapez on google and see who you will find on the top position ! Nobody needs that mixtape crap which is mostly released in the united states by crap djs with crap tracks . HipHop is nearly dead because of you. Check labels like defjux and discover djs like dj spooky .

So nerdy white kids that can't rock a party is "hip-hop"? HA! Nigga please.
WOW! someone gonna get it now

ALL of the commercial & illegal filesharing links need to be removed.

Also, please note, Hip Hop & rap are NOT the only kinds of music found in mixtapes! 76.17.39.210 13:46, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Im really not so sure on who decide what links goes up. But if a place like datpiff which offers links to download mixtapes is allowed how is that any less promoting their site, than me putting up my blog which Reviews mixtapes. The link wouldnt be redundant. - QBduckets

[edit] Requested move

I don't, actually, see the point. "Mixtape" gets 8M google hits; "Mix tape" gets 3M. I can't recall which variation Nick Hornby uses in his book (possibly even "mix-tape" which only muddies the waters further). As long as there is a redirect from the other variations here I don't see the need for a name change. Jgm 13:55, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Both "mix tape" and "mixtape" are obviously in wide use and probably equally correct. Wikipedia has to pick one of them and stick to it. The writers of the article seem to have gone with "mix tape", while whoever named the article back in the day chose "mixtape". Redirects are fine, but this inconsistency is unnecessary and unprofessional, and should be fixed. Changing every "mix tape" into "mixtape" in the article is just as fine, of course. Consistency matters. Haakon 17:52, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Since noone changed "mix tape" to "mixtape" in the article, I've moved. —Nightstallion (?) Seen this already? 11:45, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mean Streets?

I've never heard Mean Streets "cited as one of the first movie soundtracks to consist entirely of existing pop songs." The movie I've always heard talked about for that is Easy Rider, which fits that same bill and was released 4 years prior.--70.53.125.123 10:47, 23 April 2006 (UTC) <-- that was by me--Lairor 10:48, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] tributes to mix tapes in popular media?

any room for a short section on this?

only two i can think of at the moment are the tune "Mix Tape" by Jim's Big Ego (which sums up the modern day position of this otherwise obsolete media quite nicely and affectionately), and, well, the regular 94-minute "Mixtape" section of Zane Lowe's Radio 1 evening slot (they're so inventive with their names are they not!) whose basic premise is they come up with two 46-and-a-half minute runs of good, themed music... give you a five minute warning... slot in a blank cassette, press RECORD when prompted... swap over when it runs out... you get the idea. All very low tech, ends up with you getting chopped up snatches of the DJ talking, etc... but isn't that what it's all about, at the end of the day?

[edit] Cleanup tag

Bleh, somebody please remove all the "it can be argued that" or "it seems reasonable to conclude" and other such unencyclopedic phrases from the article--they are basically variants of "IMHO". Either its good information to include or its not--hence the be bold cliche. Sorry, I don't have the time to do it myself right now. Brentt 06:45, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DJ Drama and DJ Cannon arrest

Something should be added about mixtape DJ's DJ Drama and DJ Cannon recent arrest for making and selling mixtapes.

[edit] Personics and 1+1

Should this article include information on commercial compilation tapes like Personics and Island's 1+1 cassettes (assuming we can track down more information on them)?

[edit] GA sweep

In order to uphold the quality of Wikipedia:Good articles, all articles listed as Good articles are being reviewed against the GA criteria as part of the GA project quality task force. While all the hard work that has gone into this article is appreciated, unfortunately, as of May 10, 2008, this article fails to satisfy the criteria, as detailed below. For that reason, the article has been delisted from WP:GA. However, if improvements are made bringing the article up to standards, the article may be nominated at WP:GAN. If you feel this decision has been made in error, you may seek remediation at WP:GAR.

  • This article has been tagged for cleanup since September 2006.
  • The article reads like a personal essay and is seriously lacking citations.
  • It contains too many weasel terms such as: "The high point of traditional mixtape culture was arguably the publication of Nick Hornby's novel High Fidelity". Who argues that?
  • "Many commercially available compilations of pop music initially seem to share certain important characteristics with mixtapes." Original research? Who says so?
