The effects of Hurricane Georges in Haiti destroyed 80% of the bananna crop. Georges did $179 million (1998 USD) in damage to the country and killed 209 people. Georges had peaked as a Category 4-hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale days before making landfall in the Lesser Antilles. Georges was a weakened hurricane when it made landfall in the Dominican Republic on September 24, affecting Haiti as it crossed the center of the island.
