[edit] Storm history
The disturbance that would become Tropical Depression 23-E crossed into the Pacfic Ocean on September 27 over Central America.[2] The disturbance moved westward under the effects of a trough. On September 28, the depression strengthened into Tropical Depression 23-E about 225-417 kilometres from Guatemala City. The depression moved at about 8 miles per second and began to veer the depression to the northwest. On September 30, Tropical Depression 23-E was upgraded into a tropical storm and was given the name Paine.
Paine quickly intensified and a NOAA reconnissance aircraft reported winds of 75 mph (120 km/h).[2] From this reported, the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Center upgraded the system into a hurricaqne. Paine intensified more, reaching a peak strength of 100 mph (155 km/h) on October 2. Paine then began to move to the north-northeast and crossed the area near Cabo San Lucas on October 2. Paine weakened over land and dissipated over Mexico the same day. The remnants of Paine would continue over Mexico and into the United States, where it dissipated on October 4 near Lake Michigan.
[edit] Preparations
Barge operators on the Mississippi River had to run to beat rising waters. Due to this, the Army Corps of Engineers shut down dams and locks, which halted river flow.[3]
[edit] Impact
Rainfall in Mexico from Hurricane Paine was widespread. Apazulco reported the peak at 12.01 inches. Areas close to Guatemala reported rains of 1-3 inches. Cabo San Lucas also reported rain, totaling at about 3 inches. [4] As Paine continued into the United States, numerous states experienced rainfall, hitting already flooded areas. The highest rainfall occurred in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri, reporting over ten inches.
