[edit] School type/religious affiliation

The religious affiliation or designation as "non-sectarian" is not so clear cut. For example, Duke University describes its ties with Methodism as "formal, on-going, and symbolic" [1] while Wake Forest maintains "a dedication to the values rooted in its Baptist heritage" [2]. Both schools can be considered "non-sectarian" in that they are no longer under the direct auspices of their founding religious organizations. Likewise, Boston College maintains its Jesuit identity in spite of the fact that it severed its formal ties with the Jesuit Order (and thereby the Catholic Church) in the 1960s when it was independently incorporated under a lay board of trustees. Unlike the Catholic University of America, which is under the direct auspices of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, or the University of Notre Dame, which is governed by "fellows" who must be priests of the Congregation of Holy Cross, The Trustees of Boston College (BC's governing body) operate independent of any religious jurisdiction. This arrangement is probably similar to that at Duke or Wake Forest, except that the BC trustees have voluntarily chosen to elect members of the founding religious organization to the presidency (though they are not required to do so). In fact, similar arrangements exist at other Jesuit colleges and universities, where both women and non-clerics have been elected to presidency (most recently at Georgetown). All of this is to say that I think the nature of a school's religious affiliation is beyond the scope of this article, and that "public" or "private" suffice in the context of the members table.--24.63.125.78 10:09, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Logo Removal

Ed, you are acting unilaterally in your interpretation of policy yet again. There is no consensus in support of the actions you are taking. You are well aware of the ongoing discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Logos#Clarification_on_use_of_sports_team_logos. Johntex\talk 16:11, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

24.63.125.78 has coppied and pasted this on almost every college conference discussion board. Please refer to Talk:Atlantic Coast Conference so we can keep all the discussion in one place. Thanks. -- Masonpatriot

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Mvclogo.gif

Image:Mvclogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:20, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Missouri State vs Southwest Missouri State

We've been going back and forth on this for a while, so I thought I'd bring it to a talk page for discussion. Since the titles that were won by Missouri State were won when they were Southwest Missouri State, they should be indicated as such. Any titles that Missouri State wins in the future should be labeled as Missouri State titles. X96lee15 01:05, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

For historical purposes, the University considers itself "Missouri State University." You'll see this as you look through the Valley's records and tournament history or at any of the University's media guides, etc. You won't see "Southwest" anywhere, as it really is Missouri State University. You could add "formerly known as Southwest Missouri State University," but that seems a little over the top. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MOk (talk • contribs) 01:53, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
I don't think that an institution can "rewrite" history. Of course an institution can change its name, but can it really say that things in the past happened differently than they did? I'm not sure. Maybe they can? — X96lee15 (talk) 16:57, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
From what I've read, it's not so much changing history, it's more of keeping history consistent. In 20 years, few people will know Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State are the same. So, the university says references should be made to "Missouri State" because that is the official name of that institution, regardless of prior names. The MVC basketball program lists MSU as that - Missouri State - throughout. MOk (talk) 02:37, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
