"Miss You" is an R&B ballad written by Johnta Austin, Teddy Bishop, and American singer Ginuwine. It was a previously unreleased song on Aaliyah's first posthumously released compilation album, I Care 4 U (2002) and released as its lead single during the first quarter of 2003 (see 2003 in music). The song reached number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and entered the top 10 in Germany and Taiwan. "Miss You" also reached the top 20 in Canada, Denmark and Switzerland.

[edit] Lyrics

The song is sung from the perspective of a young woman who desperately misses her boyfriend who has gone off to college. She wonders if he still loves her despite their separation, and fears she may have lost him to his new life. The chorus states:

It's been too long and im lost without you
What am I going to do? Cuz I've been needing you, wanting you
Wondering if you're the same and whose been with you
Is your heart still mine? I wanna cry sometimes
I miss you

[edit] Music video

The music video for the song was directed by Little X and featured tributes by Aaliyah's friends and collaborators, including DMX, Missy Elliott, Toni Braxton, Tweet, and various others. The video shot in two locations Long Island City, New York, and Los Angeles, California. Tweet, Lil' Kim, Jaheim, and Lil' Jon were among those who came to the Long Island shoot. Jamie Foxx, DMX, Quincy Jones, and Ananda Lewis were some of the celebrities who appeared at the L.A. shoot.[1]

Between cuts clips from Aaliyah's early videos and her cameos in other artists' videos were used. Aaliyah merchandise (posters, jackets, and even a motorcycle) also appeared in the video. "Miss You" landed at number 23 on BET's "Notarized" Top 100 videos of 2003.

In YouTube, the music video is one of the songs that is most rated[2].

Slant magazine called the single "Aaliyah-lite".[3] MusicOMH.com called the single the best new song of the album as commented "Poignant lyrics ... mix well with a thoughtful, reflective, laid back tune."[4] All Music Guide—while mentioning the single with the song "All I Need"—said that they "don't have the edge of her classic Timbaland productions, but they stand up well — even when they're slotted next to the best songs of her career."[5]
