[edit] Background
Born in 1969, Jones graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City then went on to Syracuse University where she graduated with a B.A. in Music. [1] Before becoming involved with radio, Jones sang professionally during the mid-1990s. She became famous in the early 1990s for her mixtape collaborations with DJ Ron G, Common, Jahiem, Big Pun and Najee. She enjoyed some success with her independent 1994 hit "Where I Wanna Be Boy".It hit the both the R&B Top 30 and Dance Top 30 (#21/#24).
[edit] Controversy
[edit] 2003
In 2003, after the release of a board game called "Ghettopoly" by predominantly Asian investors, Jones was enraged and called for the release of a game called "Chinkopoly". The cover of the box of the game portrayed an African-American. Jones refused to apologize for her statement, despite complaints mailed to her producers.
[edit] 2005
On January 18, 2005, Jones twice aired the song “USA for Indonesia”, a controversial song ridiculing the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, less than a month after one of the biggest natural disasters ever seen by humans killed nearly 300,000 people. [1] [2] [3] [4]
[edit] 2006
In January 2006, Jones was again at the center of a controversy due to remarks she made that were considered racially offensive. Jones offended many members of New York City's large Caribbean community when she referred to Roger Toussaint, the Trinidadian-American leader of striking transit workers. as a "dumb coconut who probably doesn't have a green card" and who "should probably be murdered".
In late August 2006, the personality saw more controversy, when she insulted radio guests Beyoncé and Tina Knowles. It was thought that she was suspended from the morning show for three weeks but it turned out she had surgery for a tumor in her jaw. She was hospitalized and then had to enter rehabilitation for three weeks.
Also in August 2006, Miss Jones famously hung-up the phone in an on-air interview with Christina Milian when she would not answer some questions, Miss Jones made it clear that the star "cannot dictate the direction of the interview". [2]
In September 2006, Monica came under criticisms on the show after Miss Jones said she wasn't using her full capacity on her comeback single "Everytime Tha Beat Drop". Miss Jones stated Monica was not using her talent to her full potential by deciding not to sing on the track and have a sound more like Ciara. Miss Jones never personally attacked her.
[edit] 2007
In March 2007, Miss Jones was criticized by The Doghouse as having no radio talent. Wendy Williams appeared as a guest on the show with JV & Elvis saying "all Miss Jones does is try to start controversy to create ratings". Recently she was suspended for 2 weeks without pay but reasons remain hidden.
She has also feuded with Tiffany 'New York' Pollard, criticizing her for having "no talent", not having a real job before the Flavor of Love Show, and accused her of not attending Syracuse University, despite no evidence proving Miss Jones's statements. Tiffany Pollard stated that she attended Syracuse University (but did not graduate). [3] She later states she was a criminal justice major at Syracuse University. [4] . Miss Jones then stated that Tiffany Pollard was a liar because there is no Criminal Justice Major at Syracuse University. A look at the Syracuse University website will demonstrate the lack of a Criminal Justice major. [5] Miss Jones then over the air states she was a graduate of Syracuse which is supported by her Bio at Hot 97. [6] [5]
While promoting Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School, Larissa 'Bootz' Aurora defended Beyoncé because "Miss Jones only wants to be like her". As for fellow Flavor of Love contestant New York: "When she's clowning on New York, she's clownin' on herself and that's pathetic".
