Misery was an Australian death metal band. The group was a major act on the Australian metal scene during the 90s and released three full-length albums and an EP. A fourth album was released after the band had split up.
Misery was formed in Brisbane, Queensland in 1991 by bass guitarist Damon Robinson, guitarists Scott Edgar and Laszlo Kananghinis and drummer Anthony Dwyer who had previously been members of the bands Black Magic and Savage. With vocalist Darren Goulding the band recorded two demos, "Sorting of the Insects" in 1992 and "Astern Diabolus" in 1993. Later that year the band released its first album A Necessary Evil on Brisbane independent label Velvet Urge and early in 1994 went on a national tour with Pungent Stench. After this, Goulding was fired and replaced by Moises Contreras from another Brisbane death metal band called Mausoleum. Goulding later joined the Wagga Wagga band Manticore briefly before going on to be the vocalist with a Sydney death metal band called Sulkus. He is now the vocalist with a thrash band from Wyong called Aeturnus Dominion.
With Contreras Misery recorded the four-track EP "Insidious" for the Valve label. Video clips were made of the first two tracks, "Seeds of Doubt" and "Torn" and released as a package under the title "Invidious" in 1995. In the meantime, Contreras left Misery and the band spent some time auditioning vocalists without success until Robinson decided to take up the role himself. Work began on a new album and one song, "Dark Inspirations", was released as a limited edition transparent 7" vinyl single by New Zealand label Subcide Productions. The flipside was "Venganza Del" from "Insidious".
After this, Misery signed to Sydney's Warhead Records who released the album Revel in Blasphemy in 1997. In 1998 the band played shows in Sydney and appeared at the Metal for the Brain festival in Canberra for the first time. Misery would also play the event in 2000. By the end of 1998 the group had already completed a third album but Warhead delayed it due to other impending releases on its roster; by the middle of the following year the label had all but ceased operation and Misery's album had still not been issued. One track from the recording, "Immortal", found its way onto the Chatterbox Records compilation of Australian metal called Under the Southern Cross that was released in late 1999. Soon after, Misery was picked up by a new Sydney metal label, Venomous Records, who released the long-delayed album Curses in mid-2000.
In the long break between albums, the various members of Misery also busied themselves with other bands. Robinson, Dwyer and Kananghinis played in a doom metal band called Cardinal Sin with the drummer from the punk band Scrumfeeder on vocals. Kananghinis also featured in Green Steam, a stoner rock band. Dwyer was also briefly involved with a groove metal group called Unnerved.
Following the release of Curses, Misery recorded another album they planned to see released in 2002. However, Venomous Records folded after just two releases and shortly after the band returned from a tour of New Zealand in late 2001 Kananghinis decided to leave Misery to concentrate on Green Steam. Misery continued as a three-piece band but was far less active. In mid-2005, the group announced that it had split as Robinson had moved to the United States to live. Scott Edgar formed The Dead with former Obfuscate Mass vocalist Mike Yee the same year.
A final Misery album release entitled On Demon Wings was released by Brisbane label Obsidian Records during 2007.
