Misamis University (MU) is a privately owned, non-sectarian, non-profit educational institution that advocates a progressive and dynamic education that upholds the principle that God is the center of its existence and that education its service offering to God and country.
MU is the only university in northwestern Mindanao that caters to more than 7,000 students every year in its 7.5 hectares campus in Ozamiz City. It stands proud of all its accomplishments having grown from only 4 courses when it started, to the 55 courses it now offers. It has striven hard to faithfully fulfill its mission to advocate a God-centered existence and offer an education that is committed to the development of the person, who is God-fearing, principled, and socially responsible, service oriented, environmentally concerned and is competent to meet global challenges. It looks forward to climbing new heights, to reinvent a more comprehensive and flexible system that can meet the needs of a dynamic world.
As far back as the early 1990’s, the University started its accreditation attempts first on a consultancy basis, then the formal applicant status for the Liberal Arts, Commerce and Education. Other academic programs followed suit, namely: Nursing, Civil and Mechanical Engineering. Since then, accreditation efforts for other academic programs continued.
As early as 1998, the Misamis University then established the Quality Standard System (QSS) to raise the standard of training and competence of maritime students and to facilitate their entry into the global maritime industry. From then onwards, QSS was pursued not only in Maritime Education but in all programs as well.
At the onset of the third millennium, the institution continuously responded to the challenge of quality education in various fields of specialization. On April 4, 2000, the Computer Education program was identified by CHED as a Center of Development for Excellence in Information Technology Education. The one-year Seafarer Course with specialization in Deck Rating was opened in school year 1999—2000; while the six-month Care Giver course was started in June 2002. To widen the program for computer technology, BS in Information Technology was opened in school year 2001—2002. Subsequently, the Cisco Networking Academy Program (CNAP), was started in 2002-2003.
The year 2003 for Misamis University was highlighted with Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granting Deregulated Status through Resolution No. 393-2003. Benefits include the exemption of the university from the issuance of Special Order, freedom from monitoring and evaluation activities of the CHED, entitlement to the grant subsidies and other financial incentives or assistance from the CHED whenever funds are available; and the privilege to determine and prescribe their curricular programs to achieve global competence.
The technical vocational curricula were restructured in compliance with the requirements of the Unified TVET Program Registration and Accreditation System (UTPRAS) of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). In 2004, the two-year courses in Automotive Service Technician, Building Wiring Technician, Electronics Technician (Machinist) and Refrigeration and Air-conditioning and the One-year Nursing Assistant course were given UTPRAS Registration certificates.
In 2004, another significant achievement was attained. The University underwent a voluntary Certification for international standards based on ISO 9001:2000 for all academic programs in its pursuit for quality education. All endeavors and needed resources have been mobilized toward this achievement.
On April 28, 2005, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) granted MU a Management System Certificate No. 2373-2005-AQ-SIN-RVA. DNV in The Netherlands, through its DNV Regional Office in Singapore, a certification of Misamis University’s conformance to the quality management system as set forth by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Misamis University in the years 2000—2005 has fast-tracked its development in physical plant and facilities. The following improvements maybe mentioned as noteworthy among many others. They are HT Feliciano Building which housed the Colleges of Computer Studies and Criminology; the new Chapel, Function Hall, and Canteen complex; the Natural Science Building; Nursing Arts Room; and the Motor pool which accommodates all University vehicles.
