Minstrel Stakes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Minstrel Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in the Republic of Ireland for three-year-old and above thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres) at the Curragh in July.

It is named in honour of the Irish trained racehorse The Minstrel, winner of the Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1977.

Prior to 1991 the race was run at Phoenix Park in late April or early May and was restricted to three-year-old horses only. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 1996, having been previously classed as a Listed race. Before 2001 it was contested over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres). Three-year-olds were excluded from the race from 2002 to 2006.
