[edit] History
Opened on the 1 December 1846 by the South Eastern Railway (SER) on the Ashford to Ramsgate (via Canterbury West) line. To the east is the junction station for the SER branch line to Deal via Sandwich - itself opened on 7 July 1847. Originally there was no connection for trains running from Ramsgate SER Station to Deal and services were provided from a bay platform (Platform 3) which was still in use as recently as the 1990s.
The track alignments have been significantly altered over the year's and on an aerial photograph it is possible to map three separate alignments of the junction.
The Victorian Station Building was demolished in the late 1980s much to the regret of the village it serves. This was replaced by British Rail with bus shelter design passenger areas, although these have suffered from extensive vandalism. A Goods Yard was located on the downside with some refuge sidings adjacent to the Deal Branch. The late 19th century signalbox is still used.
[edit] Services
The typical off-peak service from the station is one train per hour to Ramsgate and one train per hour to London Charing Cross via Canterbury West. There are a small number of services running direct to London Charing Cross via Sandwich, Deal and Walmer on the Kent Coast Line, providing early morning and afternoon services for pupils and students at schools in that area. These run through the use of a single track spur line.
Peak services are generally busier, with five services to London Charing Cross before 9.00 AM, and one additional service to London Victoria via Maidstone East and Bromley South and another to London Cannon Street.
In late 2009, the station will benefit from new high speed train services, as part of the new domestic services to be operated by Southeastern on High Speed 1 to St. Pancras International. The station is expected to have 2 trains an hour in the two hour peak period [1]
[edit] Ticketing
Although there is not a ticket office or a ticket machine at the station, Minster still remains a Penalty fare zone. A Permit to Travel machine has been installed, so that customers can legally start their journey without incurring a penalty.
