Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs (India)

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs handles the enormous and diverse parliamentary affairs of India. It works as a link between the two houses of the parliament and the government with respect to Government Business in Parliament. It was created in 1949 as a department, but now is a full fledged ministry. The ministry is headed by Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, a minister of Cabinet rank. He is assisted by Bijoy Krishna Handique, Minister of State (Lok Sabha), Suresh Pachouri, Minister of State (Rajya Sabha), and Suryakanta Patil, Minister of State (Lok Sabha).

  • The Ministry renders secretarial assistance to the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs.
  • The Ministry constitutes consultative committees of members of Parliament and makes arrangements for holding their meetings, both during the session and the inter-session periods.
  • The Ministry pursues with the other ministries for prompt and proper implementation of assurances given by ministers in the Parliament.
  • Dates of summoning and prorogation of the two houses of Parliament: dissolution of Lok Sabha, President's Address to Parliament
  • Planning and coordination of legislative and other official business in both houses
  • Liaison with leaders and whips of various parties and groups represented in Parliament
  • Government's stand on private members' bills and resolutions
  • Advice to ministries on procedural and other parliamentary matters
  • Organisation of Youth Parliament Competitions in schools and colleges throughout the country
  • The salaries and allowances of officers of Parliament
  • The salary, allowances, and pensions of members of Parliament
  • The salary and allowances of Leaders of Opposition in Parliament
