[edit] The Music

Mingus Moves (Atlantic SD 1653) is one of the late works of the american bassist, composer and band leader. He hired three new musicians for the recording, Don Pullen on piano, Ronald Hampton on trumpet and George Adams on tenor saxophone. Furthermore, his longtime companion, the drummer Dannie Richmond rejoined the band on the first day of the recordings. His predecessor, Doug Hammond, can be heard as singer of the title track, together with Honey Gordon.

The recording is not regarded as one of the most famous recording, but the compositions Canon, Opus 3, and Opus 4 are remarkable.

Canon is a theme, that can be played as a canon. The song appears to have a sacred character, and is played in a warm, flowing sound by Pullen and Adams. Canon has strong relations to the sound characteristics of John Coltrane[1]

Opus 4 is a swinging, straight ahead song, where Don Pullen plays a free solo part.

Moves is a composition von Doug Hammond and is sung by him and Honey Gordon.

Wee is a more conventional composition, composed and arranged by Sy Johnson. Johnson worked with Mingus also on Let My Children Hear Music (1971), and Mingus And Friends In Concert (1972).

Flowers, written by George Adams, is a pleasing composition and provides compact swinging mainstream jazz.

Newcomer is a composition by Don Pullen, dedicated to his new born daughter. The song contains a flute solo by George Adams.

Opus 3 is based on the Mingus composition Pithecanthropus Erectus (1957), where the brass section plays relative free.

The CD released in 1993 contains additionally the songs Big Alice and The Call, which were recorded during the same session.
