Mina Swaminathan (Tamil: மீனா சுவாமிநாதன்) is the wife of the Indian Agricultural Scientist [M._S._Swaminathan]. Mrs. Mina Swaminathan, born March 29, 1933, is one of the leading educationists in India in the field of pre-school education. As a techer at St. Thomas’s School , New Delhi, she developed methods using drama in educational language learning, both inside and outside the classroom. In producing children’s plays, she has developed techniques for creative improvisation, writing and production of documentary mime plays. As Chairperson of the Study Group on the Development of the pre-school child, she submitted the report to the Advisory Board of Education which formed the basis of the scheme known as Integrated Child Development Service. Mrs. Swaminathan was Consultant to UNESCO on Early Childhood Care and Education, as well as to UNICEF when she undertook assignments in Vietnam and Kampuchea. She is the author of several books on the theme of drama for child development and has also contributed articles to leading publications. Mrs. Swaminathan is a member of the Executive Committee of the Indian Association for Pre-school Education and a Member of the Central Advisory Board ot Education.

Mina met M.S.Swaminathan in 1951 while they were both studying at Cambridge. They have three daughters: Chennai-based TB researcher Soumya Swaminathan, Kolkata-based economist Madhura Swaminathan and Nitya Rao, who works on gender issues. They live in Chennai, Tamilnadu. They have five grandchildren.
