I have been studying MLB parks for six years now and went to a Mile High LA Dodger - Colorado Rockies game in May of 1993. I pulled info from the Denver Post archives, MLB Baseball internet sites, Munnsey & Suppes, the book "Mile High Madness" by Bob Kranze and numerous web-based baseball sites such as Ballparks of Baseball.com (where the 17,000 figure comes from as well as the facinating details how the left stands were moved. I look for at least two sources before offering a fact, if at all possible.
What I have found in my research quest is that there is a lot of mis-information out there. For instance it is cited in this article that Bear Stadium was built with a capacity of 17,000 and sold out the first game. My info has that the stadium was being built for 15,000, was not yet complete, and sold out all 11,000 available seats the first game.
Another example of frustration in ascertaining a fact was in my Saint Louis Busch Stadium research. Many sources stated that the cost of the Stadium was $20,000,000, $15,000,000 from the city & $5,000,000 from Anhueser Busch. However there were also at least two sources that state $26,000,000 was raised and other contributors, Famous Barr Department Store - $2.5 million, and many other citizen groups contributed. I tend to believe the $26 million figure, but have used both figures as I have not been able to find a definitive source.

(permission has not been granted to publish this and it is only being used for discussion to find out the facts on Bear Stadium opening day seating).
