Speransky is a funny name.....

[edit] Speransky in War & Peace

It's been a while since I read War & Peace, but isn't this Speransky a friend of Prince Andrew in Tolstoy's War & Peace? I think that should be mentioned in the article if it is true. Tolstoy provides a lot of analysis on Speransky's reforms and personality, if I remember correctly. (Bjorn Tipling 00:42, 28 March 2006 (UTC))

It is indeed the same Speransky. 201.37.188.63 10:13, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Tolstoy's depiction of Speransky in War and Peace is coloured by the same disdain which Speransky engendered among the nobility whose privileges he (Speransky) was actively trying to curtail. Like anyone who attempts to change the status quo, Speransky was villainized by those who stood to lose the most from his efforts. Unfortunately, in Russia of the 19th century, those who had the means and ability to write the histories were genrally from the aristocracy, and thus Speransky remains a largely misunderstood and misrepresented figure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.23.89.187 (talk) 21:43, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
