Mike is originally from San Leandro, California.

He lived briefly in Pennsylvania and moved to Arizona in 1976. He received his formal art education at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, studying under artists Jim Pile and Jack Breckenridge.

Mike has been drawing and painting professionally since 1980 and has exhibited in numerous art galleries including: Alwun House - Phoenix, Arizona Harry Wood Gallery - Arizona State University Soft Touch Gallery - San Francisco, California Scottsdale Artists League Show - Biltmore Fashion Square, Scottsdale Gasov and Gurule Gallery of International Fine Art - Scottsdale, Arizona

Mike's early work was in the surrealist style.

After working in the surrealist style for many years Mike decided to turn away from exposing the nightmare of modern existence and instead, began depicting the forests and streams of Arizona where he had always enjoyed hiking.

Currently Michael Rider paints oil landscapes of the Arizona high country featuring detailed depictions of water reflections. In addition, he is currently painting figurative works.

The medium he uses is oil on canvas.

From 1995-2001 Mike was a key character cleanup animation artist at Fox Animation Studios and Anvil Studios in Phoenix, Arizona. He worked on the following animated feature films:

Since 2003 Mike Rider has been an art and animation instructor at the Art Institute of Phoenix.
